About to return to Vela Baja! Is the Sierra La Laguna Mountains epic bicycle crossing gonna happen again..? It was brutal. and amazing!

One of the hardest adventure of my lifetime. Never has one day taken and given back so much. Riding from coast to coast over the 6,000 range was unreal. Todd Simmler had the ability to sniff out the way. We couldn't find any GPS tracks or any "real" maps in our research. From all we know the route has not been bicycled before. It is kinda neat to think we did the first crossing of Baja with bicycles on this route. If you have any info about others doing this please share it with us via - www.mountaintouring.com

After watching some of the video I shot during the crossing recently, I am feeling like this needs to be done again. The video doesn't show any of the soul crushing hike a bikes in route to the La Laguna. The La Laguna is a dry lake bed in the center of the Sierra La Laguna Mountains. It is like a mystic oasis. Never could one image while climbing up and over some of the crazy steep and sharp ridges that it would culminate with a flat desert like area as the summit. Ok, well, we did not go up the side trail to Sierra La Picacho which is just over 7,000 ft. - ouch! We had to ball it down to Todos Santos by sunset to meet Misty. And I was waaaay out of water by then.

Caught up with some friends for the SVBC friday meeting at Flag Pole
Had a chance to ride with our IMBA guys, Rich Edwards AND Frank
Maguire, that was pretty cool!

IMBA is pushing forward a great plan to improve the Blue Ridge Parkway
Roanoke connection. Alternative "C" Check www.imba.com if you 4
minutes to comment and make a difference for everyone. Alternatve C
will keep the Roanoke Greenway from being blocked!! This trail has
vastly improved the quality of life for those in Roanoke. Residents
and visitors now have a safe place to walk, ride, and run. This
connection has become a great commuter route too giving residents a
GREAT opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle.

Trail Improvement Project in the GW - Moving Forward! - Thanks USFS, SVBC, SMT, IMBA and Ironwood Outdoors

The North River Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest has partnered with Ironwood Outdoors to rehabilitate a portion of the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail, Bear Draft Trail and Shaffer Hollow Trail. District Ranger Elwood Burge is leveraging limited trail maintance funding that will end up quadrupling its value before the project is done. By the time the project is completed the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition, Shenandoah Mountain Touring, the International Mountain Bicycling Association and other trail volunteer groups will contribute volunteer hours and provide financial assistance helping Ironwood Outdoors more the project forward.

The trail project is in Augusta County on Lookout Mountain which over looks the North River watershed in the George Washington National Forest. Stabilizing the soil on these mountain trails will improve water quality and provide a better recreational experience for all the non motorized trail visitors which consists of equestrians, bicyclists, hikers and trail runners. National Forest Trail Specialist Christian Canary said, "we are really excited to give the bicyclists' this opportunity to improve these system trails that they enjoy so much. Everyone will benefit from this collaboration"

Shaffer Hollow Trail and portions of the Wild Oak Trail are used in the upcoming Shenandoah Mountain 100 Backcountry Bicycle Event held on Sunday September 4th. The annual event is held the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. 2011 will mark the 13 edition of the event. The event is operated under a special event permit with the George Washington National Forest. The event brings over 2000 visitors to the Forest each year contributing over $500,000 annually to the local economy while leveraging hundreds of volunteer trail improvement hours associated with the event.

It was a great day of climbing. Up the long Union Springs climb with a bonus hot lap into Dunkle Hollow. It was amazing up on Shenandoah Mountain, the AC'ish cool breeze was blowing all day and the ferns were floating with a cool mixed light infused glow.

Got up at 4:20 and split for the woods at 5:30 with Thomas and Winzey

Rode 2 miles up the mountain
Stashed the bikes
Put on the trail shoes and the bushwhacking clothes and starting walking the sidehill around Lookout Mountain
Amazing sights to be seen deep in the remote backcountry of the George Washington National Forest where only animals roam
Huge wonderful old growth oaks dominating the overstory
Cool sections of table mountain pine along rocky ledge noses jutting out into the skyline
Before dropping off to the North River Gorge far below
Super large school bus size boulders with the greenest of lichen, moss and ferns
Scree fields that open up the views over towards Little Bald Knob and Reddish Knob
Then we hiked back thought it again
Taking yet another amazing route that may have never seen humans before today
Saddled up on the bikes and cruised back down the mountain
Back at work....and feeling great about it!

Lynn Trail is the 2nd climb in the Shenandoah Mountain 100 bicycle route. It is one heck of a challenging trail to climb. The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition just reconstructed the rocky steep and very difficult to ride switchback about half way up the trail. Thanks to Ed Sutton of Trail Dynamics for coming out and volunteering with our local bicycle club. Trail Dynamics just finish the work on lower Wolf Ridge Trail which is the descent that bicycles use after the climb on Lynn Trail in the Shenandoah Mountain 100. The Wolf Ridge trail project was funded by a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant that the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition was awarded. The grant is administered through Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation and funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The funds are from the estimated tax from fuel that is not used on our highways.

Another beautiful day of backcountry bike packing along the Great Eastern Trail. Most of the proposed Great Eastern Trail is shared use and open to bicycles in the George Washington National Forest. Where the trail alignment goes towards single use trails like the AT in Southern Virginia and parts of West Virginia the bicycle route will takes its own direction towards Damascus, Virginia. This bicycle route will be taking the name Virginia Mountain Bike Trail to represent the route best for bicyclists in Virginia.

We rode our bicycles so very far into the wild lands of West Virginia in Seneca Creek this weekend. Autumn at its finest. Huckleberry Trail, Lumberjack, High Meadows, a swim in Seneca Creek, Horton, Allegheny Mtn. to Whites Run. What an adventure! Thank you Monongahela National Forest for maintaining these fine trails. The brush job on Allegheny Mtn. Trail down to Whites Run was stupendous!

North Fork Mountain Trail - IMBA Wild Ride Sunday Oct. 17th - 10am Redman Run Trailhead

The North Fork Mountain Trail is in the Spruce Knob/Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. Call you representative in Washington, DC and ask them to oppose the pending Wilderness Bill and request to have them recommend that the National Recreation Area have stronger legislation that will protect this area from threats such as new road building, wind power, mining, horizontal drilling and timber management. The pending Wilderness bill will only fragment this trail system by making the northern end closed to bicycles and very hard to maintain because chainsaws will no longer be permitted for trail clearing or brushing. Stronger NRA language will also protect the amazing riding in Seneca Creek just below Spruce Knob, an area
where bicycle access has been threatened in the past. There is a better tool for the job. Stronger NRA language that treats all non-motorized recreationalists fairly over the restrictive Wilderness designation which
hurts everyone access to this amazing wild place.

Brushing with the gas powered equipment is a huge necessity when the canopy of trees overhead has died from one pass of the gypsy moth. Many people thought that it would take a few passes of the leave eating gypsy moth to kill these tree's in the George Washington National Forest. They were wrong. The average tree in your backyard can take a few devastations, 3 to 4 so I have been told, before they die. These ridge top beauties are not as resistant to these repeated devastations. It must be a hard world for trees on the ridge tops with excessive winds, thin soils, cold winters and direct sunlight from all sides all year long. The ground is now erupting with saplings', briars, invasive vines and stripped maples that are swallowing the trails and closing them off to hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. Back to the theme of the post. Thank goodness we are allowed to use mechanized devices to keep these trails open. Mechanized devices are not allowed to be used in Wilderness Area in National Forests to keep the trails open. Right now a crew of workers are spending over $100,000 clearing trails in the Ramsey's Draft Wilderness Area because they have not been properly maintained. We cleared Wolf Ridge Trail in the Little River Potential Wilderness Area for free. Volunteerism at its best. Thanks Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition for all the countless hours and dedication to keeping trails open for bicycles, hikers and equestrians in the George Washington National Forest for the last decade.

I melted down pretty bad on the climb up the backside of Reddish Knob
it was sooo hard to keep pedaling the whole way up the mountain

Massanutten Hoo Ha! is 2 weeks out - will this box turtle finish his victory lap by then?

Have you heard about the Triple Crown at the Hoo Ha? Its a great fundraiser for my local club - Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition

We are trying to get the work out about the Massanutten Hoo-Ha on June 19th and 20th.

This will be the finals for the Triple Crown and will be offering a big cash purse. Unlike the first two Triple Crown races, this last event will open up the "Stage Race" to Expert and Open (non licensed riders) racers. Which means those that sign up for the stage race will start with the Pro's and be eligle for the cash purse. If we can get 60 + riders signed up for the Stage Race (Super D Time Trial, Short Track and XC) then it will be a very large payout of $10,000. - that will go 30 deep (how cool is that!)

Super D Course: Start at the top of the paved climbed - not Kaylors (timing and size issues changed this).

Short Track: newly built SVBC 1/2 mile course with singletrack.

X/C: similar to last year with some great improvements.

The new trail at Massanutten is soooo nice with the mountain laurel blooming
Summer solstice will make the event sooo nice!

amazing sky today

I wanted to go huge over Shenandoah Mountain from town
Rough Run is such a sweet route
and then back over again via Rt. 33
I had the gear bagged and sealed - jacket and gloves
but I had to turn and dodge north
the storms were looking a bit powerful
met up with Jack and John while at the crux
got in some nice additional miles with them
we kept nice and dry for the rest of the ride
while surfing the tailwind back to town

north west looks ok

west looks sketchy

beautiful, but sketchy

nice little pockets of mountain goodness

wet roads dry me

wet me and raining good

feels great!

the Rough Run area looks rough

pedal forward into a new plan

north east is looking safe

Jack and John were looking for dry roads too

beautiful views towards Massanutten

Jack carves the dreamy roads

John is happy he didn't cancel his ride

the contrast is amazing!

Always a ton of great options when bicycling in the Shenandoah Valley
Loops and lodging, its all super good

Book at night at a snazzy B&B like the Joshua Wilton House
or shack up at ChrisScottistan

A storm was coming hard
We looped around and about it west towards the mountains
Rode with the buggies and bicyclists
Arrived back into Harrisonburg to wet pavement

Perfection!

Tony makes the big push over the last summit at the top of Dowells Draft in the SDS 3 - day. Going big with your bicycle on National Forest singletrack is a great experience!
